DESIGN ELEMENTS

Nestled within the confines of Mykonos Airport, EL PELICANO emerges as a tranquil heaven, inviting travellers to unwind. The primary goal of this project is to craft a serene and inviting atmosphere, shielded from the scorching summer heat, where passengers can relish in the island's ambiance while enjoying their favourite drink.

Drawing inspiration from the rough landscape and timeless architectural patterns of Mykonos, EL PELICANO harmonicly blends elements of Cycladic design with contemporary sensibilities.

The project consists of a single area with two counters. A sushi counter and a bar - cocktail counter. Both counters are placed in line at the store’s limit towards the airport, across a new wall with triangular openings. The remaining space of the restaurant is a sitting area with wooden furniture and plants.

The interior design reflects the verdant hues of olive trees that dot the island, infusing the space with a sense of natural tranquility. Warm and inviting materials such as rattan, wicker, and wood evoke the rustic charm of local life, while contrasting textures such as carved rock, marble, and terrazzo pay homage to the island's rugged terrain. Concrete and black-bended metal sheets succeed a  balance of the earthy tones with modern sophistication.

A reference to the existing architecture of the airport can be found in the wooden pergola covering above the cocktail counter area and the sushi bar, reminiscent of the iconic breeze blocks, allowing dappled light and gentle breezes to filter through during hot summer days. Greenery abounds, with pots and plants  throughout the space, further connecting guests with the natural beauty of the island.

The floor is made of a custom mosaic with a local white stone pattern and grey grout while chamfered wall edges pay homage to local architecture. At the sushi counter, a striking display of carved Mykonian grey rock creates a dramatic focal point, complemented by a countertop crafted from  Aliveri Marble.  Meanwhile, the cocktail counter exudes  charm with its solid wood construction, accented by a divider crafted from natural wicker, evoking the sophistication of beachside living.  To further enhance the ambiance, EL PELICANO wooden signs are strategically placed in relation to the counters, adding a touch of elegance.
